The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) plans to extend the metro rail's MRT line-6 from Uttara to Tongi, adding five new stations. The journey from Tongi to Kamalapur will take just 48 minutes once completed. DMTCL Managing Director MAN Siddique announced the extension, which will expand the route from Motijheel to Kamalapur and Uttara North to Tongi. The 7.5km extension, including stations at Diabari Bazar, Sonargaon Janpath Road East, Sonargaon Janpath Road West, Tongi Bazar, and Tongi Railway Station, will accommodate an additional 500,000 passengers. Feasibility studies and the tender process are underway.
