Nvidia's stock jumped 3.5% Wednesday, propelling the AI chip maker above Microsoft as the world's most valuable corporation.
Its surge over the previous year and a half is difficult to comprehend. Since the end of October 2022, when OpenAI abandoned ChatGPT, the company's value has increased by $3 trillion. And since May 1st, it has added $1.3 trillion, which is equal to Meta's whole market capitalization.
It's hardly a stretch to suggest that the chip designer has been lifting the S&P: Apollo Global estimates that Nvidia alone is responsible for 34.5% of the index's gains this year. It was the top performer on the index last year and is up 181% in 2024
With today's achievement, Nvidia becomes the first company other than Microsoft or Apple to occupy the top slot since Amazon in January 2019.
