OpenAI has introduced GPT-4o, an updated version of its GPT-4 model, announced by CTO Mira Murati. This new model is faster and enhances text, vision, and audio capabilities, available free to all users, with paid users enjoying increased capacity. GPT-4o’s text and image features are being rolled out today, and it supports multimodal functions, handling voice, text, and images. Developers can access the API at half the price and double the speed of GPT-4 Turbo. New voice mode features will make ChatGPT a real-time voice assistant. CEO Sam Altman emphasized the shift in OpenAI’s focus from open-sourcing to providing models for developers through APIs, fostering broader innovation. This launch, strategically timed before Google I/O, addresses previous speculation about OpenAI’s next steps, which included possibilities like an AI search engine or a new model like GPT-5.
