The federation says Dhaka street vendors are forced to pay 3,000C every year

The Bangladesh Hawkers Federation alleges that over 8 crore rupees are extorted daily from Dhaka's street traders. They claim approximately 2,70,000 hawkers operate under Dhaka South and North City Corporation, paying an average daily fee of Tk 300 each. Federation President Abul Kashem accuses police, local politicians, and "linemen" of involvement in this extortion racket. However, Dhaka police and city corporations refute these accusations, pledging to investigate with evidence. Hawkers describe an informal sidewalk "leasing" system based on location and type of stall, prevalent in key areas like Gulistan, New Market, and Motijheel, managed by various groups across Dhaka.
