The verdict was delivered on Thursday afternoon (April 9) by a three-member panel of the International Crimes Tribunal-2, led by Chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury. The other members of the tribunal were Judge Md. Manjurul Bashid and Judge Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.
Former Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Amir Hossain and Constable Sujan Chandra were sentenced to death. Former Assistant Commissioner of Police Arifuzzaman, Inspector Rabiul Islam Nayan, and SI Bibhuti Bhushan Roy received life imprisonment.
Berobi teachers Mashiur Rahman and Asaduzzaman Mandal, former Berobi VC Hasibur Rashid, and former Rangpur Commissioner Moniruzzaman were sentenced to 10 years in prison. Dr. Sarwat Hossain, former ADC Abu Maruf Hossain, Additional Police Commissioner Shah Nur Alam Patwari, and former Proctor Shariful Islam received 5 years in prison.
In addition, former general secretary of Berobi Chhatra League Mahafuzur Rahman Shamim, along with vice-presidents Fazle Rabbi and Akhtar Hossain, organizing secretaries Sejan Ahmed and Dhananjoy Kumar, and office secretary Babul Hossain were sentenced to 3 years in prison.
The investigation report in this widely discussed case was submitted on June 24 last year. Charges were framed on August 6, and the trial began on August 27. A total of 25 witnesses, including the investigation officer, testified in the case.
