In Feni’s Daripalla, allegations have surfaced that women affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami forced participants to take an oath on the Quran to vote for a candidate. Conversely, Jamaat claimed that Jubo Dal leaders disrupted a Quran class. The incident sparked anger and tension across the district.

On Sunday afternoon (January 10), women activists from Jamaat gathered at the home of local Jamaat leader Kashem Mia in Ward 8 of Sonagazi Municipality. During the gathering, they invited nearby women under the pretext of attending a Quran class. Allegedly, some women were coerced to take an oath on the Quran to vote in favor of a candidate in Daripalla. When the women attempted to leave, Jamaat leaders reportedly prevented them. Frustrated, the women contacted their relatives for help.

Upon receiving the report, several Jubo Dal leaders, including Nur Alam Ziku, Enam, and Iqbal, arrived at the scene. The women alleged that the Quran class was being used as a cover to solicit votes and intimidate them with threats of heaven and hell.

Meanwhile, women’s Jamaat leaders stated that they were conducting a regular Quran class and no political activity had taken place. After the incident, local ward Jamaat president Nur Nabi intervened, spoke to both sides, and helped calm the situation.

Sonagazi Upazila Jubo Dal president Khurshed Alam Bhunya commented, “Jamaat was soliciting votes in the name of the Quran. The Quran is not anyone’s private property.”

Sonagazi Model Police Station OC Kamrul Hasan confirmed that a police team visited the site, spoke with both parties, and resolved the matter on the spot.
