Mufti Syed Muhammad Fayzul Karim, Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Islami Andolan, has expressed opposition to reserved seats for women in the National Parliament. He stated, “I do not support the concept of reserved seats for women. Women should participate in elections directly. We do not want any form of quota for women. We have opposed quotas in the past, and we reject them now as well.”

He made these comments on Friday (January 17) at a rally organized by Islami Jubo Andolan, the youth wing of the party, at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka.

During his speech, Fayzul Karim noted, “The Reform Commission has proposed 505 seats in the parliament. Regardless of whether the number of seats increases or decreases, all members of parliament should be elected through direct voting.”

The Reform Commission, tasked with constitutional amendments, proposed a bicameral parliament with 505 seats, including 400 in the lower house, of which 100 would be reserved for women. Rejecting this idea, Fayzul Karim argued, “We do not accept the reservation of 100 seats for women, as such provisions undermine their strength and capability.”
