Former US President Donald Trump has announced that between 30 and 50 million barrels of oil from Venezuela will be handed over to the United States. He said the oil would be sold at market prices, with the proceeds controlled by the US government. Trump made the statement in a post on Truth Social on Tuesday night (January 6, local time).

According to Trump, Venezuela’s interim government will transfer the “sanctioned oil” to the US. He claimed the revenue would be used for the welfare of the people of both Venezuela and the United States.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright has been instructed to implement the plan quickly. The White House said the oil has already been extracted, with most of it to be shipped to refineries along the US Gulf Coast. A senior Trump administration official noted that Venezuela’s heavy crude cannot be stored for long, prompting the swift transfer.

Analysts say 30–50 million barrels is small compared to total US demand. However, experts warn the move raises concerns about Venezuela’s sovereignty and future oil reserves, despite limited impact on global oil markets.
