During a recent bilateral meeting in Phnom Penh, Thai Tourism and Sports Minister Sermsak Pongpanich and Cambodian Tourism Minister Sok Soken discussed promoting this initiative. They emphasized the importance of improved transportation connectivity, particularly between Siem Reap and Bangkok. Direct flights will be increased to attract more tourists. The two ministers also stressed the need to enhance road and rail links, especially between Aranyaprathet and Poipet, to make travel more convenient and accessible for tourists. The meeting took place ahead of the 47th Meeting of the ASEAN National Tourism Organizations (NTOs) and the 27th ASEAN Tourism Ministers Meeting, co-chaired by Cambodia and Malaysia. Sermsak also met with key officials, including U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia W. Patrick Murphy and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel J. Kritenbrink, to discuss regional tourism and security concerns. Talks included cooperation under the ASEAN-U.S. Dialogue on Tourism, and strategies to enhance tourism across the Mekong subregion — which includes Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. Other topics covered included sustainable tourism and efforts to attract more long-haul tourists from the U.S., China, and Europe. Cambodian Tourism Minister Sok Soken emphasized that regional cooperation and connectivity are crucial to achieving long-term tourism goals. He expressed optimism that both countries could benefit from the growing interest in Southeast Asia as a travel destination, especially as global travel rebounds from the pandemic.
