The United States is expected to announce a reduction in countervailing duties on Bangladeshi products in the US market as early as next week, according to Lutfey Siddiqi, Special Envoy for International Affairs to Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, 27 January, at the Foreign Service Academy, Siddiqi said Washington has shown a genuine commitment to lowering trade barriers on Bangladeshi exports. The briefing aimed to update the media on Bangladesh’s participation and outcomes at the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

“An announcement could come by the end of this week or early next week,” Siddiqi noted, adding that while the current 20 percent tariff is likely to be reduced, the exact scale of the cut has not yet been finalized.

He confirmed that the matter was discussed in detail on the sidelines of the Davos summit with Scott Bessent, a member of US President Donald Trump’s cabinet. Siddiqi also highlighted that several US non-tariff policy considerations align with Bangladesh’s interim government’s reform agenda. He added that Bangladesh’s trade deficit with the US—nearly $6 billion—has fallen significantly, contributing to Washington’s positive approach toward reducing trade barriers.
