The UK is set to formally recognise a Palestinian state today, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer expected to announce the decision ahead of next week’s UN General Assembly. The move comes amid worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza and rising concerns over Israel’s rapid settlement expansion in the West Bank.

Starmer had earlier said recognition would depend on Israel meeting three conditions: agreeing to a Gaza ceasefire, committing to a lasting peace leading to a two-state solution, and allowing the UN to resume aid delivery. However, with Israel rejecting these terms, those conditions remain unmet. The UK has clarified that recognition is not intended as a concession to Hamas, which it insists will play no role in Gaza’s governance.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy noted that increasing settler violence and settlement plans that threaten the viability of a two-state solution were key drivers behind the decision. Though mostly symbolic, recognition will enable the UK to establish treaties with Palestine and elevate its diplomatic mission to ambassador level. By taking this step, Britain aligns itself with 147 UN member states that already recognise Palestine, marking a notable shift in its Middle East policy.
