It has been reported that Ananya Ganguly, the top scorer in the 2021–22 Dhaka University admission test for the Faculty of Arts (Unit G), has died by suicide. The incident occurred on Saturday night (January 31) at his home in Bazar Para, Kotchandpur Municipality, Jhenaidah. His death has cast a deep shadow of grief over his family and the local community.

Ananya was the eldest child of retired Kotchandpur Municipal Women’s Degree College professor Pradyut Kumar Ganguly and Radarani Bhattacharya, headmistress of a local school. He was a student of Dhaka University’s English Department. His younger sister, Lithi Moni Ganguly, is also currently studying at Dhaka University.

A gifted student from an early age, Ananya earned scholarships in PSC, JSC, and SSC exams. However, after entering college, he faced mental health challenges that kept him away from studies for nearly five years. After returning, he achieved outstanding success in the Dhaka University admission test, topping the science stream with a score of 103.95.

According to family sources, Ananya had long struggled with mental health issues, which may have led to his decision to take his own life.

Pradyut Kumar Ganguly said, “My son was extremely talented, but he had been suffering mentally for some time.”

Md. Asaduzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of Kotchandpur Model Police Station, said the case is being investigated thoroughly. The body has been sent for autopsy, and the cause of death will be confirmed once the report is received.
