In Thakurgaon, a northern district of Bangladesh bordering the Himalayas, freezing cold and dense fog have made daily life extremely difficult. Even during the day, the sun remains hidden. Amid this harsh winter, a mother is struggling to survive with her three children in a dilapidated home.

Bilkis Akter, a resident of Sindurna Nadipara village in Raipur Union of Thakurgaon Sadar, lives with her three children while her physically disabled husband is unable to provide for the family. She single-handedly cares for her children.

Her eldest son, Faisal (13), her middle son, Kawser (8), and her youngest daughter, Jannatun, include two children with physical disabilities.

As night falls, the cold intensifies. The tin-and-bamboo house allows icy winds to seep in. Bilkis covers her children with straw mats and torn blankets, but it does little to keep them warm. The children shiver throughout the night and often fall ill.

The family lacks sufficient warm clothing or special care. Even when the children become sick, she cannot afford medical treatment. The sounds of their coughing and crying keep Bilkis awake all night, and she spends the hours beside them.

Neighbor Rezaul Islam described the family’s plight, saying they struggle to get three proper meals a day and lack adequate clothing. The children are too young to understand the hardships, and Bilkis cannot fulfill even their simplest wishes. They have no proper bed and must sleep on the floor, lacking basic necessities.

Bilkis, overwhelmed with emotion, told The Times of Bangladesh, “I am their mother, and I cannot bear to see my children suffer. I cover them with torn clothes and a single blanket, but my two disabled children cannot endure the cold. They shiver all night, and I can only shed tears watching them.”

“We survive on just rice. A few neighbors have helped us. Without them, I don’t know what would have happened,” she added.

Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner Ishrat Farzana assured that authorities are looking into the matter and will take the necessary measures to help the family.
