A video has surfaced on social media showing Khairul Kabir Niyogi, the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate for Netrokona-3 (Kendua-Atpara) constituency, allegedly threatening BNP supporters with violence. The threat was reportedly made by his nephew, Zakaria Niyogi, during a protest rally in Bongbazar, Kendua, last Tuesday.

Zakaria Niyogi is a member of the district Jamaat executive committee and the son of Rayhan Niyogi, Khairul Kabir Niyogi’s cousin. He works as a part-time English lecturer at Gurudayal Government College in Kishoreganj and hails from Kolsahati village, Kendua.

According to party and local sources, a dispute had occurred between Zakaria Niyogi and BNP supporters over a local road in Kolsahati during Ramadan. The following day, clashes involved Zakaria’s followers and BNP supporters, leading to the assault of Zakaria’s group. In response, a protest rally was held by the Jamaat candidate, during which Zakaria gave a roughly 10-minute speech. A 1 minute 38-second clip circulating online shows him saying, “…you better think from today; if a voice is raised in the future, the throat will be cut. If anyone points a finger at my uncle, the finger will be broken…”

Speaking to Prothom Alo, Zakaria said his comments were made out of anger and frustration over repeated harassment of him and his relatives by BNP supporters. He expressed regret, saying, “The video shows only a part of my speech, and some inappropriate words were heard. It was wrong of me to speak like that. I apologize to everyone. I also face threats from student activists at college, which affects my safety.”

Jamaat candidate Khairul Kabir Niyogi said, “Zakaria spoke in the heat of the moment. His remarks were inappropriate. He is not a party worker. I have reprimanded him and expressed regret publicly.”

BNP candidate and district general secretary Md. Rafiqul Islam Hilali said, “We and our supporters feel unsafe due to these threats. The Jamaat candidate’s nephew cannot make such statements. I will submit a written complaint to the Returning Officer.”

Assistant Returning Officer and Kendua UNO Md. Rifatul Islam confirmed that the video has come to their attention. The police have been asked to investigate, and legal action will follow if a written complaint is received.
