Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, Adviser to the Interim Government on Finance and the Ministry of Science and Technology, said that the country’s current economic situation is no longer fragile. Reserves have increased from $18 billion to $32 billion. In just one and a half years, the interim government has moved the economy from the ICU to the cabinet.
He made the remarks on Monday, January 19, while speaking to reporters at Hasan Ali Government High School ground in Chandpur after inaugurating a campaign to promote the referendum, encourage voters, and launch voter awareness vehicles.
Dr. Ahmed noted that rampant corruption and money laundering had pushed the economy to the brink, and the government is now working to recover it. In just 18 months, the current administration has lifted the economy from the edge of collapse.
He further emphasized that any government must implement reforms to ensure judicial independence, speedy justice, and law and order. He said the government has already undertaken several reforms and urged citizens to vote “Yes” in the referendum to support their continuation.
When asked about concerns over the vote, he responded that there is no political pressure now, and no party can influence the election with money. He added that with everyone’s cooperation, the election will be fair, and he hopes responsible, selfless, and people-oriented candidates will come forward.
After his remarks, the advisers and government officials inspected referendum stalls at the ground and interacted with voters present.
Earlier, at 10 a.m., a discussion meeting was held at the Sadar Upazila Auditorium in Chandpur, organized by the district administration to promote “Yes” votes and encourage voters. Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed delivered the keynote speech as the chief guest.
The meeting was chaired by District Commissioner (DC) Md. Nazmul Islam Sarkar, with Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) S.M.N. Jamiul Hikmar presiding. Special guests included National Board of Revenue Chairman Md. Abdur Rahman Khan and Chandpur Police Superintendent (SP) Md. Robiul Hasan.
