A few hours after vote counting began in Tamil Nadu, early trends suggest a strong performance by actor Vijay’s newly launched party, Tamilaga Vajrathri Kazhagam (TVK), according to NDTV.

Counting is underway across all 234 assembly constituencies on Monday (May 4). At present, TVK is reportedly leading in 85 seats, while the AIADMK-led alliance is ahead in 77 seats, indicating a close contest.

The ruling DMK, in alliance with Congress and DMDK, is currently in third place.

TVK chief and actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay is leading in Perambur, though his party is trailing in East Tiruchirappalli. These two DMK-held constituencies have become key battlegrounds, with mixed trends suggesting a divided voter response in his debut electoral fight.

Vijay’s entry into politics and the rise of TVK have added fresh excitement to the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, which were earlier expected to be primarily a contest between the DMK alliance and the AIADMK-led NDA.

Perambur, constituency number 12 under the Chennai North Lok Sabha segment, is an urban seat with a population of around 2.22 lakh and a strong political legacy. The DMK has traditionally held the seat, with R.D. Shekhar winning comfortably in 2021 by securing over 52% of the vote.

With Vijay choosing Perambur as one of his debut constituencies, the seat is being viewed as a symbolic political showdown against the DMK’s influence in North Chennai.

Widely known as ‘Thalapathy’, Vijay enjoys a massive fan following across Tamil Nadu. His appeal among youth and urban voters, along with his stance against caste-based politics, is seen as a potential advantage in a state where identity politics remains significant.

Alongside Perambur, Vijay is also contesting from East Tiruchirappalli, another DMK stronghold. His decision to contest from two sensitive seats reflects an assertive strategy to gauge his popularity against the ruling party across regions. TVK is contesting all 234 assembly seats independently.
