A four-member delegation of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) met with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. Speaking to reporters after the meeting on the evening of January 19, the party’s convener Nahid Islam stated that they will not allow manipulated elections this time, and the vote will be conducted fairly, like in 1991.

Nahid said that if the Election Commission (EC) fails to remain neutral, they may have to take a stand against it, though they do not seek direct confrontation. He questioned whether Tarique Rahman’s statement, “I have a plan,” implies controlling the independent EC.

He added that tensions with the EC existed before but were party-related; now, with the election approaching, if the EC fails to gain public trust, how can a fair election be expected? He expressed confidence in the EC but warned that continued improper behavior could force them to take to the streets.

Referring to past elections, Nahid said that people could not vote for 16 years due to the politicization of the EC. This election will be different, ensuring democracy.

He also stressed that all political parties share responsibility for a fair election, urging everyone to act responsibly. However, he criticized BNP for failing to demonstrate such responsibility.

Meanwhile, the party’s spokesperson, Asif Mahmud Sojib Bhuiya, claimed that the EC is acting unilaterally at the grassroots level, which obstructs free and fair elections. He expressed doubts about the EC’s ability to ensure impartial voting.

He added that Nahid Islam and Nasiruddin Patwary were issued show-cause notices for their role in public campaigning, which he claimed was done unfairly, and urged that the notices be withdrawn promptly.
