Former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia passed away in the early hours of 30 December. Since then, BNP Chairman and Khaleda Zia’s eldest son, Tarique Rahman, has participated in several prayers and memorial gatherings seeking blessings for her soul.

On Tuesday (20 January), Tarique Rahman, accompanied by his wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman, attended a prayer ceremony organised by residents of Korail at the T&T Ground in Mohakhali. The prayers were led by Maulana Mohammad Ibrahim.

Before the prayers began, a notable and humane scene unfolded on stage. Typically, religious scholars leading prayers sit to one side. However, during Khaleda Zia’s prayer event, Maulana Mohammad Ibrahim sat on stage in front of everyone to lead the prayers, while Tarique Rahman and party leaders, including his wife, participated from behind.

A video circulating on social media shows that just before the prayers for Khaleda Zia’s soul began, Tarique Rahman noticed the Maulana sitting to the right of the stage. He stood, brought a vacant chair to the front of the stage, exchanged greetings with Maulana Ibrahim, and invited him to sit there. The Maulana then conducted the prayers from the chair at the front of the stage.

The video of Tarique Rahman showing respect to the Maulana quickly went viral on social media, with many appreciating his thoughtful gesture.

The prayer ceremony was coordinated by Abdus Salam, chief coordinator of BNP’s election management committee for the Dhaka-17 constituency. Local BNP leaders and members from surrounding areas also attended the event. By the time Tarique Rahman arrived, the entire ground was packed with people.

Tarique Rahman is contesting the 13th parliamentary election from the Dhaka-17 constituency, which includes Korail and Mohakhali.
