In protest against the banned political activities of the Awami League, the lockdown it announced, and the ongoing unrest across the country, angry students in Jashore have demolished Mujib Square. On Thursday afternoon (13 November), the square located near the Central Shaheed Minar in Jashore city was torn down using a bulldozer.

According to eyewitnesses, around 12 p.m., members of the Anti-Fascist Student Movement held a protest march in the city against the nationwide chaos. After the rally, they used a bulldozer to demolish Mujib Square near the Central Shaheed Minar.

Earlier, during last year’s July uprising, parts of the Mujib sculpture had been vandalized but not completely destroyed. This time, the remaining pieces were flattened by the angry students. Abu Huraira, convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said, “During the July mass uprising, thousands were crippled by the Awami League and Hasina, and over 1,500 students lost their lives. Even now, the streets are soaked in the blood of martyrs. Yet the Awami League, like hyenas, has again turned to violence and terrorism. That’s why the students, in anger, have demolished Sheikh Mujib’s square, the father of BAKSAL.”

Abdullah Al Mamun, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jashore Sadar Police Station, confirmed to Kaler Kantho that the Mujib Square was demolished by the enraged students.
