SSC candidates in Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur were forced to sit for their examination under candlelight due to a prolonged power outage, sparking frustration among students and guardians.

According to the Upazila Secondary Education Office, the exams were held at Pairaband Begum Rokeya Memorial Girls’ School and College. On Sunday, 854 students appeared for the English First Paper exam across 17 rooms. However, the center remained without electricity throughout the morning, forcing students to take the exam in candlelight, which caused significant inconvenience.

The center secretary and principal, Mahedul Alam, said that uninterrupted electricity supply had been assured, but despite repeated communication with the power office, the issue was not resolved. Later, as stormy weather began, large candles were arranged to continue the examination.

Mohammad Ashraf Uddin Khan, manager of Rangpur Palli Bidyut Samity-1, stated that the center is connected to the Rangpur grid via the Baldipukur substation. A damaged transmission line disrupted the power supply, and efforts are underway to restore electricity through an alternative line from the Shathibari grid.

Mithapukur UNO Md. Parvez said there was negligence on the part of the center secretary for not informing him earlier. He added that had he been notified in time, immediate steps could have been taken. Authorities are now ensuring backup arrangements, including LED lights, candles, and rechargeable lights, for all examination centers.
