A satirical carnival singing group in Cádiz, Spain, has attracted attention with a performance inspired by Stephen Hawking, combining dark humor with social awareness at the city’s Official Carnival Groups Competition. The troupe paraded through the streets in electric wheelchairs before presenting a 30-minute musical act titled “A Chirigota in Theory.” Twelve performers imitated Hawking’s voice, gestures, and appearance, using satire to highlight amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the disease Hawking lived with.

To ensure sensitivity, the group worked with the ALS Association of Andalusia, which provided guidance on the act’s content. The performers emphasized that their goal was to raise awareness, not cause offense. They also revealed that the wheelchairs used in the performance will be donated after the competition.
