Rickshaw puller Md. Shukkur recalled how, after placing a sign on his rickshaw, he faced harsh criticism from some people. They blamed women’s clothing for rape, to which Shukkur responded, “Then why do little children get raped? Is it their clothes’ fault too?” His firm reply angered the critics, but he remained unfazed. “I won’t stop telling the truth, why should I?” he said.

The message, "It’s not my clothes, it’s your mentality that causes rape," was displayed on Shukkur's rickshaw. He had put up the slogan during the 2020 lockdown, despite facing negative reactions from others. Although the metal plate rusted and broke within two years due to its thinness, Shukkur kept the message on his rickshaw. Aged just over fifty, Shukkur is an ordinary man who began working as a rickshaw puller during Ziaur Rahman’s regime. The artwork on his rickshaw was created by Mohammad Hanif Pappu, a renowned artist in Bangladesh’s rickshaw art community, with the assistance of Mohammad Monir Hossain. However, Shukkur’s rickshaw wasn’t the only one carrying such messages. Around 15-20 other rickshaws also displayed similar awareness slogans addressing issues like child marriage, noise pollution, and anti-rape advocacy.

Shukkur explained his views on rape, saying, “I think there’s no greater sin than this. And blaming the victims for it is a sin. The blame should rest solely on the person committing the crime.” When asked if he would allow such art on his rickshaw again, Shukkur smiled and responded, “Yes, of course. I have no problem showing the truth, the issue is with the people.”
