Despite remaining outside the national cricket team for a long time and a dramatic shift in the country’s political landscape, world-renowned all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan remains firm in his political stance. In a recent interview, he expressed a strong desire to return to active politics and contest elections in the future.

Shakib made the remarks on Wednesday (14 January) during an online interview with BD Crictime, hosted by Zahid Chowdhury.

His comments have sparked fresh discussions in both sporting and political circles. Shakib clearly stated that if given the opportunity, he intends to contest elections again from his birthplace, Magura. Despite facing multiple challenges in his cricketing and personal life due to political changes, his confident remarks reflect clear future ambitions.

Shakib contested the 12th National Parliamentary Election in 2024 as an Awami League-nominated candidate from the Magura-1 constituency and was elected with 185,000 votes. However, following a mass uprising in August the same year that led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, the parliament was dissolved.

During that turbulent period, Shakib was abroad, yet multiple cases were filed against him. He also faced strong public backlash for being associated with the ousted government. Nevertheless, he has made it clear that he has no intention of stepping away from politics.

Responding to a question about future elections, Shakib said, “Why wouldn’t I contest elections? Of course I will. I have no doubt or hesitation about it. Inshallah, I will contest from my birthplace, Magura.”

He added that he would continue to make his utmost efforts to serve the people of Magura. Although currently busy playing in various franchise leagues around the world, his remarks highlight his determination to maintain a strong presence in politics.

Shakib’s political ambitions, emerging amid uncertainty in his cricket career and ongoing legal challenges, have triggered renewed debate. Analysts suggest that his willingness to return to electoral politics despite legal cases and public discontent reflects a bold attempt to sustain his political career.
