Sanajida Khan, mother of Shaheed Shahriar Khan Anas, has expressed anger over the prison sentences handed down to three of the accused in the Chankharpul killings case, questioning the fairness of the International Crimes Tribunal’s ruling.

Following Monday’s verdict in a case of crimes against humanity during the July uprising, Sanajida Khan said, “If the killer of my son receives only a three-year prison sentence despite video evidence, do you really consider this a just verdict? I don’t think so. I have lost my child. Even after all the evidence, a three-year sentence…”

On August 5, 2024, the tribunal sentenced former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, and former Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Ramna region Shah Alam Md. Akhtarul Islam to death for shooting six people in Chankharpul.

Among the other accused, former DMP Assistant Commissioner Imrul was sentenced to six years in prison, former Shahbagh police inspector Md. Arshad Hossain received four years, and former constables Md. Sujan Hossain, Imaz Hossain, and Md. Nasirul Islam were each sentenced to three years. Four of the accused—Habibur, Sudip, Akhtarul, and Imrul—remain at large, while Arshad, Sujan, Imaz, and Nasirul are in custody.

Shaheed Anas’ father, Shahriar Khan Palash, also voiced his frustration after the verdict, asking, “Can this even be called a punishment?”

Anas, a 10th-grade student at Gandaria Ideal Academy in Old Dhaka, had joined the “March to Dhaka” program on August 5, during the final phase of the uprising. Police opened fire on protesters in Chankharpul as ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India, killing six people, including 16-year-old Anas. The other victims were Sheikh Mahdi Hasan Junayed, Md. Yakub, Md. Rakib Howlader, Md. Ismamul Haque, and Manik Mia Shahrik.

After the interim government took office, it was decided that crimes against humanity committed during that period would be tried at the International Crimes Tribunal. The Chankharpul verdict marks the tribunal’s second ruling. The first verdict, delivered on November 17 last year, sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan to death. Another accused, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, received five years in prison as a royal witness.
