The death toll from consuming rectified spirit (alcohol) in Rangpur has risen to seven, including the seller of the liquor. Police said several others are still seriously ill and are receiving treatment secretly at different locations. The liquor seller also fell sick after consuming the spirit and later died.

Senior Jail Superintendent of Rangpur Central Jail, Abhijit Chowdhury, said drug dealer Zainal Abedin, arrested from Shyampur in Badarganj, was brought to the jail as a new inmate on the evening of January 13. Shortly after, he became seriously ill and was admitted to the CCU of Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he died around 7:00 am on Wednesday while undergoing treatment.

Earlier, on the night of January 11, several people fell ill after drinking rectified spirit at the house of known drug dealer Zainul Abedin in the Shyampurhat area of Badarganj upazila. Three people—Alamgir Hossain of Basantapur village, Sohel Mia of Purba Shibpur village, and Jennad Ali (35) of Sahapur village—died on the spot. Another person later died in hospital in a separate but similar incident.

Meanwhile, Officer-in-Charge of Hajirhat Police Station, Azad Rahman, said that on the evening of Monday (January 12), Manik Chandra Roy (60) fell ill after consuming alcohol at Balar Bazar under Hajirhat Police Station. He died the following afternoon while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Police said Zainal Abedin was arrested with 10 bottles of rectified spirit, and two separate cases have been filed at Badarganj and Hajirhat police stations. Several others affected by the incident are reportedly receiving treatment privately.
