Saudi Arabia has pledged a grant of Tk 244 crore for the construction of eight iconic mosques across Bangladesh. The announcement came during a meeting on Sunday (July 27) between Saudi Ambassador Dr. Abdullah Jafar H. Bin Biayan and Religious Affairs Adviser Dr. A F M Khalid Hossain at the Secretariat.

The funding is part of a royal Saudi initiative aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation in religious and development sectors. Dr. Hossain stated that preparations for construction would begin soon, with land proposals already received from several divisions and efforts ongoing to finalize the remaining sites.

Highlighting the strong ties between the two nations, Dr. Hossain noted that around 3.2 million Bangladeshi expatriates reside in Saudi Arabia, contributing significantly through remittances and labor under Saudi Vision 2030. He also thanked the Saudi government and Ministry of Hajj and Umrah for ensuring a smooth and organized Hajj this year, while suggesting improvements for the future—such as better washroom facilities, uninterrupted water and electricity supply, and larger beds in Mina tents.

The ambassador assured that these suggestions would be communicated to the relevant Saudi authorities and reaffirmed continued support for Bangladesh’s development.

The two sides also discussed other areas of cooperation, including the installation of RFID tags for Hajj pilgrim luggage and the establishment of an Arabic Language Institute in Dhaka. The meeting was attended by Religious Affairs Secretary A.K.M. Aftab Hossain Pramanik and Hajj Wing Joint Secretary Dr. Md. Manjurul Haque.
