Russian Ambassador Alexander Mantytskiy has dismissed reports claiming $5 billion was embezzled from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project, calling them “completely false and a rumor.”

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with Bangladesh’s finance adviser in Dhaka, he said the allegation was illogical, noting that the total project cost is $11.38 billion. He questioned how such a large amount could be handed over to anyone while the project is still under construction.

The ambassador said Rosatom had already issued a statement rejecting the claim. He also alleged that the rumor was spread before Bangladesh’s January 2024 election as propaganda to damage Russia and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He added that Russia wants to continue cooperation with Bangladesh in trade, economy, science and technology. He noted bilateral trade reached $2.7 billion in 2020, while Bangladesh exported around $900 million worth of goods to Russia, most of which were garments.
