Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter has faced strong criticism for a Facebook post about the celebration of Valentine’s Day. In the post, shared on Tuesday night, she wrote, "Respecting the July-August martyrs and injured, there should be no 'Valentine's Day' drama this year."

Speaking to Prothom Alo on Wednesday morning, Farida Akhter clarified, "There is no government ban on this. It was just my personal appeal. A martyr’s family asked me to make this appeal, and I genuinely feel this way. I believe from the heart that Valentine’s Day isn’t part of our culture. Love can be celebrated throughout the year. Valentine’s Day has always faced criticism. I strongly believe it doesn't belong to our culture."

She added, "We will celebrate Falgun and observe February 21, but this year is a unique situation, and not a joyful one; we cannot forget the many martyrs and injured." Farida Akhter also mentioned, "Many things get exaggerated on this day. I made this appeal to ensure it doesn’t turn into a mockery."
