Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor of the caretaker government, has approved a proposal to rename the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The specialized unit will now be called the Special Intervention Force (SIF). From today, Tuesday, February 3, RAB will be known by its new name, although operations under the new designation will begin following the official order.

This was announced by Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury during a briefing after the law-and-order core committee meeting at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

He also stated that the unit’s uniform will undergo changes. Production of the new uniforms has already started, and SIF members are expected to be seen in the new attire next week.

The Home Affairs Advisor noted that RAB’s role has evolved over the past one and a half years, and many had expected a name change as a result.

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Nasimul Ghani, added that some people considered the name “RAB” to carry a negative connotation.

Meanwhile, Chowdhury also spoke on the upcoming elections, asserting that they would be conducted smoothly, transparently, and in a festive manner, leaving no room for doubt. He expressed confidence that, with police morale and efficiency now significantly improved, there will be no difficulties during the elections.
