A group of protesters marched through the streets of Old Dhaka, calling for a boycott of the annual Shakrain festival. In a video circulating online, participants chanted that there is “no place for Shakrain in Puran Dhaka” while voicing their objections to the celebrations.

Shakrain, also known as Poush Sankranti, is traditionally observed on January 14, marking the end of the Bengali month of Poush. The festival is famous for kite flying, rooftop gatherings, fireworks, music, and traditional foods like pithas, making it one of Old Dhaka’s most vibrant cultural events.

Neighborhoods such as Shakhari Bazar come alive with kite battles, illuminated rooftops, music, and fire performances after sunset. Despite the protests, Shakrain continues to represent cultural celebration, community bonding, and shared traditions for many residents of the capital.
