In Florida, a Jewish man who strongly supports Israel opened fire on two Israeli tourists, mistakenly believing they were Palestinian. The victims, a father and son from Isr*ael, were shot and taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds. The suspect, 27-year-old Mordechai Brafman, has been charged with attempted murder.

While in custody, Brafman allegedly admitted he thought he had killed two Palestinians. Authorities confirmed the attack was unprovoked. This incident has brought attention to Florida’s lenient gun laws, which allow concealed carry without mandatory training or background checks.

Hate crime reports in Florida have surged by more than 50% from 2022 to 2023, contrasting with a decline in similar incidents in other large states. Following the shooting, CAIR's Florida chapter is pushing for federal hate crime charges, stressing that the legal response should focus on the attacker’s bias-driven intent, regardless of the victims' identity. This case highlights how hate crimes can sometimes stem from mistaken identity.
