Over the past 17 months, a total of 600 incidents of political violence have been recorded nationwide, resulting in the deaths of 158 political activists and injuries to 7,082 others.

According to a study by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), 91.7% of the incidents that occurred after August 5 involve the BNP.

The research, published today (February 2) under the title “One and a Half Years After the Fall of Autocracy: Expectations and Achievements”, also found that 20.7% of incidents involved the Awami League, 7.7% involved Jamaat-e-Islami, and 1.2% involved the National Citizens’ Party (NCP).

The report, released at a TIB conference hall, notes that internal conflicts within parties and political violence continue. From August 2024 to December 2025—this 17-month period—600 political violence incidents were recorded nationwide, with 158 activists killed and 7,082 injured.

Of these incidents, BNP leaders and activists were involved in 550 cases, while Awami League members were implicated in 124, and Jamaat-e-Islami in 46 incidents.

TIB highlighted that after the government change, clashes and violence spread as parties sought to seize control over institutions and operations previously managed by the Awami League. This includes extortion at transport terminals and stands, illegal stone extraction from quarries and rivers in Sylhet, and disputes over leasing bridges, markets, ghats, sandbanks, and water bodies.

The study also revealed that the internal control mechanisms of political parties were largely ineffective, and parties failed to take effective action against their own members involved in violence and illegal activities.
