The body of Shafiqul Islam (42), a constable, was found in the toilet of the Yatrabari police outpost in Dhaka on Wednesday morning (January 28).

Shafiqul Islam was from Mautupi village, Motlob Thana, Chandpur, and the son of Mannan Mallik. He joined the police service in 2003 and was posted at the Yatrabari outpost.

Police suspect he took his own life out of despair. At 3:25 AM, he reportedly sent a message to his eldest daughter: “I could not do anything for you. Please forgive me. Take care of Junaid and Zihad.” He did not answer her subsequent calls.

According to his wife’s elder brother, Abdul Hannan, Shafiqul had been suffering from mental depression for a long time.

Yatrabari Police Outpost In-Charge, Sub-Inspector Russell, said his body was found hanging in the outpost restroom. The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for post-mortem and will be handed over to the family afterward. Legal procedures are ongoing.
