Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday, with the two sides discussing several key bilateral issues. During the meeting, Bangladesh expressed hope that India would speed up the extradition process for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Bangladesh Secretariat’s Cabinet Division, according to Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Swadhin.

At the start of the meeting, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman welcomed the Indian High Commissioner. Trivedi also shared his experiences from his first two months serving as India’s envoy in Dhaka.

During the discussion, the Prime Minister reiterated Bangladesh’s request for India to return those accused of involvement in the murder of Shaheed Osman Hadi.

Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir and other relevant officials attended the meeting.

The Prime Minister’s Office announced the meeting in a post on its verified Facebook page at around 12:15pm.

According to sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this was Trivedi’s first meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman since he assumed office as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh in June. As part of preparations for the courtesy call, Trivedi met Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman on Sunday afternoon.

Several Foreign Ministry officials told Prothom Alo that the Indian High Commissioner met the Foreign Minister at the State Guest House Padma on Sunday. Officials from both sides were present at the beginning of the meeting, after which the two held a private discussion for more than half an hour. The meeting had been scheduled in advance.

Trivedi became India’s 16th High Commissioner to Bangladesh after presenting his credentials to the President on June 25. He first met Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman on July 29 and held a second meeting with him on Sunday.

Speaking about Bangladesh-India relations, a senior government official told Prothom Alo’s diplomatic correspondent that Bangladesh wants to resolve outstanding issues through dialogue and believes this approach can help restore the relationship to a positive path.

The official said relations between the two countries should move forward based on mutual respect, dignity and interests. At the same time, each country should remain mindful of and respectful toward the sensitivities of the other.
