Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that the government will ensure the maximum punishment for those responsible for the widely discussed child murder case in Mirpur, Dhaka, within the next month.

He made the remarks on Saturday afternoon while inaugurating the birth anniversary celebrations of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at the Nazrul Academy premises in Trishal Upazila, Mymensingh.

Referring to the incident, the Prime Minister said the brutal killing of an innocent child in Mirpur reflects a serious erosion of human values. He stated that the government would adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward violence against children and women.

“The current government will not tolerate any form of abuse against children or women under any circumstances. We will ensure the maximum punishment for those involved in this murder within the next month, and that punishment will be the death sentence so that no one dares to commit such crimes in the future,” he said.

Tarique Rahman also stressed the importance of establishing the rule of law to build a safe and humane society.

“We need to transform our political culture and revive Bangladesh’s enduring religious, social, and cultural values in national life. In this regard, the life and works of Kazi Nazrul Islam remain highly relevant,” he added.

Highlighting the poet’s legacy, the Prime Minister said Nazrul’s life and literary contributions should gain wider recognition globally and be passed on to future generations.

As part of preserving that legacy, he said he would request the Ministry of Culture and the Tourism Department to explore the possibility of declaring Trishal—known for its strong connection to the national poet—as “Nazrul City.”

“Bangladesh and Kazi Nazrul Islam are inseparable. He represents our national identity, national consciousness, and the spirit of our nationalism,” he said.

The event was presided over by Culture Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury. Other speakers included Trishal MP Mahbubur Rahman; Dhaka University Professor Tariq Monjur; poet Nazrul’s granddaughter, National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Institute Trustee Board Chair Khilkhil Kazi; Executive Director Md Latiful Islam; Information, Broadcasting, and Cultural Affairs Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman; BNP Joint Secretary General Syed Emran Saleh; Culture Secretary Kaniz Mawla; State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam; and Deputy Minister of Culture Ali Nawaz Mahmud Khaiyam, among others.

Cabinet members and lawmakers from different constituencies also attended the program.
