Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that farmers will benefit from the ongoing canal excavation projects. He also announced that, following the legacy of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, girls’ education will be made free up to the degree level. He added that students achieving good results will also receive stipends.

He made these remarks at a public gathering held after inaugurating the dredging work of Ulshi canal in Sharsha upazila of Jashore on Monday (April 27), as part of the government’s nationwide initiative to excavate and re-excavate rivers, canals, and water bodies.

The Prime Minister said, “We promised to dredge canals, and we have started fulfilling that promise. Today we launched the programme here in Jashore. Earlier, we began canal excavation in Dinajpur as well. We are also working on introducing family cards to help women become self-reliant.”

Several ministers and local MPs were present at the event, including the Health Minister, Water Resources Minister, Power and energy state minister, and other government officials.

Earlier in the morning, the Prime Minister departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for Jashore and landed at Jashore Airport at around 10:15 AM. He was welcomed by local representatives and senior officials.

The Ulshi–Jadunathpur canal, which is part of the project, holds historical significance. In 1976, former President Ziaur Rahman initiated voluntary excavation of a nearly 4-kilometer canal in the same area, later known as the “Zia Canal.” The site still bears a commemorative plaque marking its original inauguration.
