# Patient Dies After Ambulance Blocked Twice by Local Syndicate on Shariatpur-Dhaka Route

A patient from Shariatpur Sadar Hospital reportedly faced two instances of obstruction on the way to Dhaka on Tuesday, after which he died before reaching the hospital. The deceased has been identified as 70-year-old Jamshed Ali Dhali, a resident of Kutubpur in Damudya Upazila. He passed away in the afternoon.

Family members of Jamshed Ali alleged that 8–10 people, led by ambulance owner Suman Khan from the Shariatpur Sadar area, blocked the ambulance twice—at Kotapara and Jamtala on the Dhaka-Shariatpur road—for a total of one and a half hours. With help from locals, the ambulance was eventually allowed to continue toward the National Institute of Neurosciences in Dhaka, but Jamshed Ali passed away around 4:00 PM en route.

According to his family, Jamshed Ali fell ill on Tuesday morning, and his relatives took him to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital around 9:00 AM, where he was admitted. Doctors later advised transferring him to the National Institute of Neurosciences in Dhaka for advanced treatment.

The patient’s family hired an ambulance from the hospital premises at 11:30 AM for 6,000 BDT. After the patient was on board, the fare was demanded to be higher, so they arranged another known ambulance for 5,000 BDT and set off for Dhaka. Around noon, local members of the ambulance syndicate blocked the vehicle at Kotapara, questioning why an outside ambulance was being used instead of local services.

With the intervention of nearby locals, the ambulance was allowed to proceed after 40 minutes. However, at Jamtala in Narai, the same group stopped the ambulance again, and it was held for another 50 minutes. After finally being allowed to continue, the ambulance resumed the journey toward Dhaka, but Jamshed Ali passed away before reaching the hospital.

Around 8:00 PM, his relatives brought the body to Palong Model Police Station in Shariatpur, initially reporting the matter verbally. Police later asked them to file a written complaint.

Jamshed Ali’s grandson, Zobayer Hossain, told Prothom Alo at 9:00 PM that the local ambulance syndicate was angry because they did not hire a local ambulance and blocked their vehicle twice for a total of one and a half hours. With local assistance, they eventually managed to continue to Dhaka, but his grandfather died before reaching the hospital.

Rashed Ahmed, a doctor at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, told Prothom Alo, “An elderly man with stroke-related problems was admitted in the morning. He was later advised to go to the National Institute of Neurosciences in Dhaka for advanced treatment. We cannot comment on what happened with the local ambulance drivers on the way.”

A similar incident occurred on August 14 last year, when members of a local ambulance syndicate blocked an ambulance transporting a patient from a private hospital in Shariatpur to Dhaka. In that case, a newborn died on board. The newborn’s father filed a case at Palong Model Police Station on August 16, naming four people, including former Civil Surgeon’s Office driver Abu Taher and his son Sabuj Dewan, along with 5–6 unidentified individuals.

When contacted, the accused ambulance driver Suman Khan told Prothom Alo, “I only inquired why a hospital patient was boarding an ambulance operating in Dhaka. I did not block any ambulance. These allegations are not correct.”

Shah Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Palong Model Police Station, told Prothom Alo, “We have received the complaint. Since it was verbal, no legal action could be taken. The deceased’s family has said they will submit a written complaint. Once the complaint is filed, legal steps will be taken.”
