North Gaza is in ruins, covered in rubble and dust. Jana Mohammad Khalil Musleh al-Skaifi, who has lived there for 12 years, now carries a large plastic bucket with the urgent task of collecting food and water for his family. One year ago, his older brother was killed by an Israeli sniper, leaving Jana responsible for gathering supplies because both of his parents are ill.

Relief supplies have not arrived for a long time, and clean water is extremely scarce. Jana spends hours standing in line, hoping to collect enough water to quench his parents’ thirst first, then drink what remains. He said, "I don’t want my parents to suffer. I have to be strong for my father, who is old and has heart problems."

His hands are strained from carrying heavy buckets, and his clothes are soaked with the precious water. Wearing a Cinderella T-shirt, Jana’s childhood dreams seem far away, replaced by the harsh reality of caring for his family. Recently, his little niece died from hunger due to lack of medicine and nutritious food.

Since the war began after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, food and water shortages have worsened. For the past 11 weeks, Israel has blocked all aid to Gaza. A recent UN report states that one in five people in Gaza, home to 2.1 million, faces famine, worsening daily. While Israel says the blockade aims to pressure Hamas to release hostages, many international groups accuse Israel of using famine as a war tactic. Access to clean water is also limited because Israel blocks water purification equipment, fearing it could be misused.
