The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) has officially released the online editions of textbooks for the 2026 academic year, sparking debate over how the history of Bangladesh’s Liberation War is presented in several grades.

The digital textbooks were uploaded to the NCTB website on Sunday, 28 December. The launch event was attended by Education Adviser Professor Dr Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar and Primary and Mass Education Adviser Professor Dr Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar, who formally unveiled the online versions. Officials said printed textbooks would be distributed to students across the country from 1 January.

According to the online Class Six Bangladesh and Global Studies textbook, Major Ziaur Rahman is described as having declared Bangladesh’s independence on 26 March 1971 from Kalurghat Radio Station in Chattogram, followed by a second declaration on 27 March on behalf of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The textbook, however, does not elaborate on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s wider role in the creation of Bangladesh, nor does it use the title “Bangabandhu” before his name.
