The government has formed a five-member commission led by former Supreme Court Justice Rajendra Kumar Bhandari to investigate the assets of politicians and senior officials who have held key positions over the past two decades.

The Cabinet approved the decision on Wednesday, aiming to examine, verify, and collect asset details of public office holders from 2006 to the present. The commission includes former justices Purushottam Parajuli and Chandiraj Dhakal, former DIG Ganesh KC, and chartered accountant Prakash Lamsal.

Opposition parties welcomed the move but urged that the probe be evidence-based and free from political influence, suggesting that such investigations should be backed by permanent laws.

The commission was first proposed in a March 27 decision under Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s government, which also outlined a second phase to review assets from 1991 to 2005.

The government has also formed another committee to implement recommendations from a separate report on the September 2025 incidents involving security agencies.
