Nearly one million Indian nationals living in Canada could face the loss of their legal immigration status in the coming months as a large number of work permits approach expiration, raising fears of a potential immigration crisis.

Data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) shows that about 1.053 million work permits will expire by the end of 2025, followed by another 927,000 in 2026. Individuals who fail to renew their permits or secure permanent residency risk losing their legal right to stay.

Immigration consultant Kanwar Serah told Hindustan Times that Canada has never experienced such a sharp rise in residents losing legal status within a short timeframe, warning the system could be overwhelmed. He estimated that by early 2026, hundreds of thousands may become undocumented.

Temporary foreign workers and international students are expected to be the hardest hit, as many work and study permits near expiry and asylum approvals face stricter scrutiny. Experts warn that without timely policy action, the number of undocumented migrants could rise sharply, creating long-term challenges for Canada.
