The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) has published the online versions of textbooks for the 2026 academic year. The Class Six Bangladesh and Global Studies book states that Major Ziaur Rahman declared Bangladesh’s independence on March 26, 1971, and reiterated the declaration on March 27 on behalf of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The textbooks were officially uploaded to the NCTB website on Sunday (December 28) and inaugurated by Education Adviser Professor Dr Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar and Primary and Mass Education Adviser Professor Dr Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar. Printed copies are scheduled to be distributed to students from January 1.

The Class Seven, Eight, and Nine–Ten textbooks also present a limited or absent portrayal of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Awami League in the context of the Liberation War. However, the Class Seven book mentions the Awami League’s victory in the 1970 election and includes a photograph of Bangabandhu. While the books state that Bangladesh achieved independence through the Liberation War in 1971, the name of the Awami League is not mentioned.
