Nasiruddin Patwary, the candidate for Dhaka-8 and chief coordinator of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has demanded the expulsion of Mirza Abbas from the BNP. He alleged that Mirza Abbas’s group launched a sudden attack on his supporters at Habibullah Bahar College, calling on BNP chairman Tarique Rahman to take action. “Now it’s up to Tarique Rahman to decide whether to protect terrorists within the party or expel them. I have sought justice for this attack on behalf of all of Bangladesh,” he said.

Patwary made the statements during an urgent press conference on Tuesday (27 January) at a hall in Fakirapool, Dhaka. Local leaders from 11 parties, including NCP coordinator Nahid Islam, were present. He stressed that he had no involvement with corrupt or criminal funds, yet his supporters were still attacked. He claimed that prior to visiting the college, he had heard complaints about exam leaks, illegal activities, and irregularities in the governing board, which was formed by Mirza Abbas. He also noted that the college principal was appointed during the Awami League tenure.

Recalling a past meeting with former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, Patwary said she had prayed for them and urged them to uphold the country’s integrity. “If she were alive today, she would be ashamed to see these actions. Whether I win or lose the election, I will not allow any reign of terror in Dhaka-8. On 12 February, the public will deliver a verdict against terrorism and corruption,” he added.

Patwary blamed the attack on Chhatra Dal, claiming that a few former leaders led the assault, and alleged that the mastermind was a close associate of Mirza Abbas. He questioned the Election Commission, saying it must clarify why they should participate in the election if security cannot be guaranteed and a fair vote cannot be ensured.

Earlier on Tuesday, while attending a Pitha festival at Habibullah Bahar College around noon, Patwary and his supporters were pelted with eggs by a group of youths. The incident triggered tension across the college and surrounding areas, prompting law enforcement to take precautionary measures. Eyewitnesses said the unrest began when Patwary arrived at the festival as a candidate of the Shapla Kali symbol, leading some students to chant slogans and throw eggs. Patwary eventually left the college and sat on the road outside.
