With the timeless slogan, “He who stops reading for an hour falls behind for a century,” the 57th edition of the Cairo International Book Fair, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious literary events, has kicked off in Egypt’s capital, Cairo. Ranked second in size after Frankfurt, this year’s fair has also brought pride for Bangladesh.

The fair, bustling with participants from 83 countries, has seen Bangladesh’s authors gain special attention. Notably, Arabic books by renowned Bangladeshi scholar and Khateeb of Baitul Mokarram National Mosque, Mufti Abdul Malek, have become a focal point for international readers.

Ibrahim Khalil Majumdar, a student at Al-Azhar University, said that Mufti Abdul Malek Hafez’s famous Arabic book Al-Madkhal ila Ulumil Hadisish Sharif has once again made the bestseller list at this 2026 edition, just as it did in 2021. In addition, his newly published research works have attracted significant international interest. While the fair is a major platform for rare Arabic books, the strong sales of Bangladeshi authors’ works abroad is also a source of great pride.

The fair, which began on 21 January, is organized under the General Egyptian Book Organization (GEBO). The exhibition halls are arranged by theme: Hall 1 houses the organizers and the Cultural Palace Authority; Halls 2 and 3 feature foreign publishers and various government publishing houses; Hall 4 is dedicated to religious publications and the Al-Azhar Pavilion, including a Fatwa Corner and free gifts; Hall 5 is a special children’s corner offering books and entertainment at nominal prices.

Running until 3 February, the fair features 1,457 publishers and 6,637 exhibitors, along with nearly 400 cultural workshops. This year, the fair is dedicated to Egypt’s Nobel laureate author Naguib Mahfouz as “Personality of the Year.”

To encourage readers, both government and private publishers are offering a 30% discount. Additionally, under the Egyptian government’s “A Library for Every Home” initiative, a special package of 20 books is available for just 100 pounds, with some books priced as low as 1 pound. The fair has become a global gathering for book lovers and international publishers from the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. This grand literary event will continue until 3 February.
