Bamong Khyang Minglen, headmaster of Tindu Junior Secondary School in Thanchi, Bandarban, is personally operating an engine boat to help cover teachers’ salaries. The school, established in 2020, currently serves 56 students from low-income families who are unable to pay regular tuition fees.

To support the institution financially, Minglen uses a boat provided by the local administration to transport tourists and passengers along the Thanchi–Remakri route on weekends and holidays. In a recent two-month period, the boat generated 49,100 BDT, of which 30,000 BDT was used to pay staff salaries.

Holding both an MBA and BEd degree, he chooses to drive the boat himself to avoid hiring an additional operator. He explained that employing a driver would reduce income and create risks of underreported earnings, whereas personally managing the service ensures maximum funds go directly to the school.

Local authorities say this model is a practical way to support teacher salaries in remote areas through tourism. Former Tindu UP Chairman Mongpru Aung Marma added that the school currently depends on this income to continue operations. Although the institution received official recognition in 2023, it is still awaiting full government support while its permanent building remains under construction.
