BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia may be buried beside her husband, former President Ziaur Rahman, at Zia Udyan in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said on Tuesday (December 30).

Speaking to the media, Salahuddin Ahmed said Khaleda Zia’s janaza may be held on Wednesday (December 31) at Manik Mia Avenue. He added that the BNP is in contact with the interim government regarding arrangements for her funeral and burial.

Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia passed away at 6:00 am on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un). In a post on the BNP’s verified Facebook page, the party confirmed her death, stating that she passed away shortly after the Fajr prayer, and sought prayers for the salvation of her soul.

Khaleda Zia was 80 years old at the time of her death. Her elder son and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, along with close family members, were present at the hospital.

Her health deteriorated on the night of November 23 this year, prompting her admission to Evercare Hospital. She had previously been hospitalized at the same facility on October 15. At the time, a member of the medical board, Professor Dr. FM Siddiqui, said she was suffering from a chest infection and that her heart and lungs were affected.

Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government amid a mass uprising in July–August 2024, President Mohammed Shahabuddin granted Khaleda Zia clemency under Article 49 of the Constitution. She was receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital at the time. On January 8, she traveled to London for advanced medical care and returned to Bangladesh on May 6 after four months of treatment via air ambulance.
