A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6 struck eastern Afghanistan late on Saturday, killing at least 500 people and injuring 1,000, according to initial reports. The US Geological Survey stated that the quake occurred just before midnight near the border with Pakistan. Aftershocks were also felt in Pakistan and as far away as India.

Sharafat Zaman, spokesperson for the Afghan Health Ministry, said, “Rescue operations are underway, and several villages have been completely destroyed.” He added, “The figures for deaths and injuries are changing. Medical teams from Kunar, Nangarhar, and the capital Kabul have arrived in the area, but casualty numbers have not yet been finalized.”

The quake struck various towns in Kunar province, most severely hitting Asmar and Nurgal. The Kunar Disaster Management Authority confirmed widespread damage in the districts of Asad Abad, Soki, Watapur, Maragi, and Chawkay. Homes made of mud and wood collapsed, while helicopters were deployed to evacuate the injured.
