An enormous unexploded bomb dating back to World War II has been recovered in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar, triggering widespread panic and curiosity among local residents. For more than a decade, locals had unknowingly stood on the bomb while washing clothes, unaware that the heavy metal object was in fact a powerful explosive.

The bomb was found on the bank of a pond in the Lot Ukhiarghona Tchakhali area of Ward No. 8 under Koyarkhop Union in Ramu. Although the object had remained there for years and was widely believed to be ordinary scrap metal, law enforcement agencies and Bangladesh Army ammunition experts recently confirmed that it is a powerful unexploded bomb from the World War II era.

According to police, around 10 to 15 years ago, several locals discovered the object during pond renovation work and placed it on the bank. Daily activities continued around it, with women regularly using the spot to wash clothes. After the pond was filled, the bomb remained abandoned on the homestead land of Abdu Shukkur Driver and Monir Ahmed.

Local resident Mizanur Rahman said they had no idea it was a bomb at the time. “There were fan-like parts at the front, along with a chain and a plate-shaped locking mechanism. We broke those parts and sold them to scrap dealers,” he said.

Another resident, Sirajul Haque, said, “People have been moving around and washing clothes here for years, but by the grace of Allah, nothing happened.”

The matter came to the attention of authorities last Thursday after Ramu-based historian and lawyer Shirupan Barua posted photos of the bomb-like object on Facebook. He suggested it could be a Japanese bomb from World War II and stressed the need to examine whether it contained explosives. Following the post, police took notice of the issue.

Officer-in-Charge of Ramu Police Station, Monirul Islam Bhuiyan, said it has been preliminarily confirmed as a large unexploded bomb from World War II. “The bomb has been secured, the surrounding area cordoned off, and the army was informed, which responded promptly,” he said.

A Bangladesh Army team led by ammunition expert Captain Jannatul Ferdous inspected the site. Army sources said the bomb weighs approximately 300 to 320 kilograms, measures about 119 centimeters in length, and has a diameter of roughly 117 centimeters.

A security perimeter has been established around the bomb, and residents have been instructed to stay away. Authorities said maximum caution will be maintained until the bomb is safely neutralized.

Historian Shirupan Barua said that if the bomb is found to be inactive, it could be preserved as a historical artifact from World War II. “It would be a part of Ramu’s history,” he said.

The revelation that residents unknowingly lived for decades in such close proximity to death has left the local community shocked and deeply unsettled.
