RAB Director General AKM Shahidur Rahman has cautioned that the country's overall law and order situation could worsen during Ramadan. While speaking to reporters in the early hours of February 23 after inspecting a check post in the capital’s Matualil area, he pointed out that extortionists who were previously backed by political parties have now turned to robbery and other crimes in the aftermath of the mass uprising on August 5, 2024.

"Before August 5, those involved in these activities operated under political protection. Earlier, they used to carry out extortion discreetly, but such practices are no longer in place. Now that they cannot engage in these operations under political cover, they are resorting to different forms of criminal activities," he explained.

The RAB chief urged the public to promptly report any incidents of rape, theft, or robbery. Acknowledging that complete control over robbery has not yet been achieved, he assured that RAB is intensifying its efforts through increased patrols, checkpoints, and coordinated operations with other law enforcement agencies.

"In the meantime, all RAB battalions are actively patrolling their assigned areas. Additional patrols are being deployed continuously to strengthen security in high-risk and strategically important locations," he stated.

Rahman also highlighted the issue of repeat offenders, emphasizing that some criminals, including robbers released on bail, are continuing to engage in unlawful activities.
