The decision to drop Mustafizur Rahman from IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has had a visible impact on the team’s social media presence. After removing Mustafiz from the squad and deleting all related posts from its Facebook and Instagram pages, Bangladeshi fans expressed strong backlash. As a result, the franchise lost more than one million followers within just 24 hours.

KKR had previously been one of the most popular IPL teams in Bangladesh due to the presence of Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das. Interest grew further this season after Mustafiz was signed for INR 9.2 crore. However, following his exclusion on BCCI instructions and the removal of all related content, fan support quickly turned into anger. While KKR had over 18.11 million followers 24 hours earlier, the number dropped to around 17 million by the time of reporting—indicating a loss of one million followers.

Meanwhile, the security and political complications surrounding Mustafiz are now affecting the upcoming T20 World Cup as well. Bangladesh was scheduled to play all four of its group-stage matches in India during the tournament to be held in India and Sri Lanka. However, due to security concerns, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is reluctant to send the team to India and has formally requested the ICC to move Bangladesh’s matches to another country.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, the ICC has responded positively to the BCB’s request and has not ruled it out. A final decision may be announced within the next one or two days.

The T20 World Cup will take place from February 7 to March 8, with Bangladesh placed in Group C alongside England, West Indies, Nepal, and Italy. As per the original schedule, three of Bangladesh’s matches were set to be played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata and one in Mumbai.
